Au XVII<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle, on d\u00e9cide de construire un mausol\u00e9e pour abriter la ch\u00e2sse contenant les reliques de saint Thomas d\u2019Aquin. Tel un arc de triomphe antique, il est construit de pierre, de marbres polychromes et de bois dor\u00e9. Il est orn\u00e9 de colonnes, d\u2019ob\u00e9lisques et de statues  r\u00e9pondant \u00e0 l&rsquo;art baroque. Inaugur\u00e9 en 1628, il aura fallu 4 ann\u00e9es pour le r\u00e9aliser. Ses dimensions le rendent monumental : 19,44m de haut.
